Civil Rights Project Reflection by Tyrone K

I learned many things during this month and with completing this project. One item that stood out to me the most is that Dr. Martin Luther King was a reverend. He had a church, and was one the founders of the SCLC.

The speeches the SCLC gave was something I found interesting, They protested for civil rights, created a movement and for a name. This gave blacks and whites the opportunity to be able to work together as a team for the SCLC.

The SCLC was focused on its effort towards citizenship, schools and efforts to desegregate individual cities such as Albany, Georgia Birmingham and many more places. The movement played a key role in the march on Washington in 1963.

The only changes I would make to this assignment is just adding more than what I did. I feel like it was a little less with pictures and all. I would add better details of the movement. However, other than that I feel I did pretty good for this assignment

My topic was about the Freedom Rides and Core. The Freedom Riders were the people who protested against segregation on buses and terminals until it was prohibited. They left in May of 1961, and segregation was prohibited in Fall of 1961.

When doing this project, I learned how to advance google search, and cite links. I think these are important so that no images or links get copyrighted and you know they’re legit.

I liked learning about the Freedom Riders because I liked learning what helps us live the world we live in today without people having to feel different because of their race.

One thing I would change about this project is making us do less research notes and images and not having us cite the work. I would change this because it is less time consuming and makes the project go by faster.

I wrote about Langston Hughes who wrote novels, short stories, plays, and poetry, and is also known for his engagement with the world of jazz and the influence it had on his writing. He also helped out in the Harlem renaissance.

I learned about Langston Hughes, what he did and how he did it. I Didn’t know he wrote books but I have officially learned that he did. Langston Hughes also was a social activist and helped during the civil rights movement.

I liked that I got a good person to write about and that he actually helped during the Harlem Renaissance. I read a book he wrote online, I Too Sing, America. That book was amazing and I absolutely loved it. I recommend you read it some time.

I would personally not make any changes to this assignment because it was absolutely amazing one of my favorite projects to do so far. I would definitely recommend another project like this that comes around soon!!

Billy Stewart was born in Washington D.C He was born March 24, 1937. At the age
of nine Stewart played the piano. At 12 he began singing gospel with his three younger brothers. He was a famous singer and pianist.

I learned a lot of information about Billy Stewart and what and who he was. I learned that he was a famous singer and pianist and wrote and sung a lot of popular
songs.

I liked the assignment because we got to pick someone who had a impact on
black history month.

I would change nothing.

Whitney M Young Jr was a little boy that wanted to be just like his father growing up. That was his main idol growing up.Whitney was born on the campus that his father was President at ,Lincoln Ridge, Kentucky. As Whitney was growing up and got to the right age he become the President of The National Urban League. He believes that it helps a lot of African Americans that needed a place to be at.Mr.Young had to  receive a bachelor’s degree to have this place in The National Urban League.

He went to Kentucky State College where his dad was once President of .During Whitney M Young Jr importance of Civil Right Act, Young became known as an influential Black activist who helped bridge the gap between white political and business leaders and poor  Black Americans and those fighting for their rights.Whitney took his job very seriously because he wanted everyone to have the same rights and everyone be cooperative with each other.Whitney was a Great man that helped a lot of African Americans of need.

I liked some things about this assignment like how I learned some things about Black History.I liked how we did the script and how we had to put it in a Canva.I just liked learning about Black history in general.I liked how everyone got their own person to learn something about also.

The changes I would make in this assignment would be less links.I would change how we did research, like just put in our own words so we don’t have to make another google doc about it.I also would like to change how long we have on a assignment because i have no type of time after school to do the work.I would change how many imagines we have to put also i think it was too many links and imagines

Hi, my person was Billie Holiday. She made a big impact on the civil rights movement. During the 1930’s she joined a white band, being the first African American to join a white band. “Strange Fruit” is said to be the first protest song, since the lyrics are comparing victims to the fruit on trees. Billie Holiday’s song is included in the Songs of the Century. She passed away in July 1959.

I learned about who Billie Holiday was. In my family my parents mentioned her sometimes, they say they like her songs or something, and I never knew who she was. I learned about how civil rights really affected people, from Holiday making a song about it.

I liked having to make a google doc for our research notes. That helped me stay organized in a way. I liked how we created this on Canva and could make nice creative templates.

However, that being said, I did not like having to record ourselves speaking. It’s better than going up in front of the class, but I don’t like my voice in general.

The topic I researched was the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing. This church was
located in Birmingham Alabama, and was a very important civil rights meeting location. The church was bombed by the KKK, and 4 girls were killed during the bombing. This bombing affected many, and in the aftermath, many people were upset. I learned how important this church was, and how many people were affected by it. I was able to learn how important the civil rights movement was, and how many people did not like the idea. In the end, I learned how everything needed to line up to make everything work. I enjoyed being able to pick our topics and do our own research. I liked how, instead of a presentation, we had to make a video that we didn’t have to present to the class. And lastly, I enjoyed how easy the project material was to understand. Changes I would make in the future to this project would be to lower the amount of work that this project needs. This project was stretched to almost 3 weeks while it could have been done in 1. I feel that the exit questions with this project were not helpful, and just added workload to it. If I were to change anything, it would be to remove the exit questions.

My topic was Smokey Robinson. He was very influential for the musical industry by
doing many incredible things. Such as founding the band the Miracles in high school as well as being the lead singer and the record producer. Then becoming a famous independent artist when he became older. His music was influential as an R&B artist because it is very popular in the civil rights movement. I have learned many skills from this project such as being able to research a topic better and learning how to look deeper into things. Also I learned how to use Canva and all of its features. I liked learning about the topics and finding out why this is an important part in history.
One thing I would change was doing research notes then doing the script. I rather do the notes then change it on the notes.

My project was about William “Smokey” Robinson Junior who I learned was a singer and songwriter. He was big during a time when racism was a huge problem. His influence through his music helped during the civil rights movement because he was a positive image for African-Amricans. His music and face was in the homes of every American regardless of race. I liked that you let us use an AI generated voice instead of our own and that we have to presentate, but not stand up and read our whole script out loud. In the future I need to take more of my free time to work on it in study halls and at home. I think I put good effort into it while I did it, but I could have taken more time out of my days.

Wilma Rudolph was an incredible woman. At a young age she was told she would never walk normally again. Wilma suffered from childhood polio, pneumonia and scarlet fever. After Wilma hit puberty her athleticism started building up. She wanted to do things and she did overcome all her childhood illnesses. She became an Olympic Track Athlete and encouraged other younger athletes to do the same. Rudolph was a kind-hearted person, always trying to end segregation and help others. In the end, Wilma died from brain cancer. She is still a well loved and remembered athlete. This project has helped my vocabulary, it helped me research better, I learned how to use AI translator and Canva. This assignment was really fun to do, I enjoyed learning about Wilma’s childhood and her life in general. If I had to change something about this project I’d change if you have to speak or not. I feel that you should add the AI translator into a part of the project for an available option for people who do not like their recorded voice.
