People In World History

Hello, This is Jesse G from Mrs. Sal’s period 1 class.

Thomas Woodrow Wilson

Thomas Woodrow Wilson was the twenty-eight president of the United States, and a leading supporter of the League Of Nations. Wilson was intelligent, considerate and idealistic and that’s why he led the country through some of its darkest days during World War I. In 1885 Wilson became a teacher at Bryn Mawr College. Wilson was a great success, he coached a winning football team, and published a renowned work in comparative government called The State. Wilson’s intelligence, ability to stort details and commanding presence came to the attention of New Jersey’s political leaders who proposed that he run for public office. In 1910 Wilson was elected governer of New Jersey. In a short amount of time he pushed through major state reforms and he was swept into the White House by 1912. During his first term as president he passes significant tariff and banking reforms, but two years into his term, Wilson’s wife passed away and World War I broke out in Europe. As hard as Wilson worked to keep the United States out of the war, on April 6, 1917 the war entered the U.S.! Wilson was the leader in the 1918 Peace Conference that ended the war, but he pushed himself to hard and in 1919 he suffered from a severe stroke. Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and he retired with his 2nd wife, Edith Bolling Galt, who he married in 1915, 3 years after the tragic death of his first wife. He lived in Washington D.C. until 1924 when he died.

Archduke Francis Ferdinand

Francis Ferdinand was born in Graz, Austria, the oldest son of Archduke Charles Louis and the nephew of Emperor Francis Joseph. When he was 12 he inherited the title archduke of Austria-Este, he became the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1899, after the deaths of his dad and cousin.

Tuskegee Airmen Assignment

Hi, This is Jesse G and Jenea M. from Mr. Sal’s 1st period 20th Century class.

The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of aspiring pilots, who came to the Tuskegee Airbase to begin training to become fighter pilots in the war. During the training they were discriminated against for being African American, the white pilots thought that they were insufficient compared to themselves. These pilots-in-training were put to tough tests, flight school, and maneuverability tests in the airplanes. After getting their pilots license, they started scouting and doing ground patrol runs.

The white airmen didn’t want to share the same space as the African Americans because they thought they weren’t good enough to fight in the war. Unbeknown st to their knowledge that they actually needed the African American fighter pilots to help escort the bomber planes so they wouldn’t lose their men to the opposing enemy planes. They needed them because they were better than what some white pilots have predicted.

The preception that the Tuskegee Airmen had changed was that colored men were just as good as the white men, if not better. They could fly and fight and bring down the enemy just as well as the best white pilot. They proved that everyone can do whatever they want no matter the color of their skin.

Cost of living :)

This is Jesse G from period one. How many kids are trying to find a job? How many adults are out trying to find one? Money is all anyone cares abou anymore. When are they going to get paid and how much are they getting paid. The cost of living has skyrocketed since the 1900’s. Prices have gone up immensely for the necessities, as in clothes, food, water and shelter. Many people were out of a home in the 1900’s. That number has just increased since then. With all of the immigration and people coming to America from over seas we are giving them jobs that belonged to good American citizens. The recession is another big factor as to why the cost of living has increased since the 1900’s.

1 bag of flour $1.80
Small measure of potatoes daily at .17 per day $1.19
1/4 lb of tea .38
1 qt milk .56
1 lb cheap coffee .35
Sugar 3 1/2 lb $1.05
1/2 ration meats per week $3.50
4 lb. butter $1.60
2 lb. lard .38
Dried apples for treats .25
Vegetables .50
Soap, starch, pepper, salt, vinegar, etc. $1.00
2 bushels of coal $1.36
Kerosene .30
Sundries .28
Rent $4.00 week

Total $18.50

This is a list of necessities that a family needed during one week. The family’s only income was their father, who only made $16.00 a week. The family’s costs were $2.50 more than what the father made. This just goes to show how you can work 14 to 16 hour days and made as little money as that during the recession and the depression era. Later on as necessities’ prices rose so did the income to the regular family. The regular income of a family of four was $25,000 a year. Things started looking up toward the 21st century. The average paycheck according to being payed minimum wage is around $275.00. This amount of money in the year 1915 would be worth $5,900.25 in 2010. This just goes to show how the years have changed the economical world.

What I want to learn!

The two things I would enjoy learning about this year are the Korean war, only because my grandpa Leon was in it. The next thing I want to learn about is world war II. I want to learn about it because I think it would be interesting to learn about in more detail than what I have heard about it in the past. These two topics in particular that I want to learn about just because they seem interesting and I just want to learn what actually happened.
