Living Conditions

Hi, my name is Marissa G. from 20th Century period 6. In the 1900’s, the living conditions of the urban areas were very unhealthy and not particularly safe. Because of the growing population of the cities, the amount of space for living was very limited. The space was so limited that the houses and buildings were built right next to each other. The ventilation system caused people to become ill and diseased because of how close they were and the lack of care given to it.

Jane Addams helped by making a community center and nursery. She would watch people’s children so they could go to work without leaving their young home alone like many would have had to before. Although this didn’t help with the increasing about of people living in the city, it helped by giving people a place to go besides their own homes. Eventually they had to make more city space, places to live, and take care of living conditions more carefully.
