Chapter 8 Blog

My name is Cassandra R from Mr. Sal’s period 6 US History class. In the early 1900’s working conditions were horrible for the average worker. None of the newly made factories were safe or clean for human beings and the workers were not paid good wages. Production of meat was done in unsanitary conditions and ended up sold when it was already spoiled, leading to sick consumers. Also, in one factory locked it’s doors so workers could not leave during breaks but this led to disaster when a fire broke out and the workers could not get out to save their lives. People like muckrakers tried to fix this problem by writing about the terrible conditions. One muckraker in particular, Upton Sinclair, wrote about the terrible conditions of a meat packing plant. This brought about changes to make the factories safer and more sanitary for the workers. It didn’t make things 100% better, but definitely improved conditions for the everyday 1900’s workers.
