Assassination of Osama Bin Laden

Hi I’m Brandon R. and I am in Mr. Sal’s period 6 20th Century History class and we have talked about the assassination of Osama Bin Laden that took place on May 1, 2011. Bin Laden was assassinated by U.S. Navy Seals in Bin Laden’s mansion in Pakistan. Once Bin Laden was killed, Bin Laden’s body was taken to sea so the body can be buried. This technic is called “sea burial”. Americans are celebrating over this which we should be, but we should still be on our toes. Someone can take over Bin Laden’s spot and still cause terriorism which still puts me in fear. I would feel so much better once terriorism is put to a complete halt and our world is peaceful.

Tuskegee Airmen (NS,BR pd.6)

Brandon R., Nate S. pd 6.
The Tuskegee Airmen formed when African Americans wanted to be pilots for the United States Army. They wanted to be pilots because they were from the United States and they wanted to serve their homeland like every other pilot. The African Americans went to training to learn basic flying maneuvers. When the African Americans became certified war pilots, they were called the “Tuskegee Airmen” due to them becoming pilots while segregation being present. After they became certified war pilots, they were sent to war with people who were racist and did not appreciate the African Americans’ service. Through out the war, attitudes changed towards the African race when one of the Tuskegee Airmen fought with an American bomber against the enemies. Then after this, the white American pilots wanted to be escorted by the “Tuskegee Airmen” because they realized that the “Tuskegee Airmen” are as equal as the white American pilots. The legacy that was created was the African Americans overcoming segregation and people realizing that Africans Americans are the same as white Americans. After this people saw Africans Americans just as equal as white Americans.

World War I

Hi, I am Brandon R. and I am in Mr. Salvucci’s 20th Century US History period 6. Recently we had a simulation World War I game in the class and I was part of the France empire along with Clay N., Marissa M., and Ashley S. In order to be successful in this war we had to have a very successful strategy. With our economic points, we spent them on the industry and the Navy so we could earn more money to build our Navy. In this simulation we also had treaties with every empire except Austria, Great Britain, and the Hungarian empire, because we felt we were gaining more power with every other country except these. During the war we had broken a treaty with the Ottoman Empire because we had more power with the other empires rather than Ottoman alone. After the simulation was over, I was rather disappointed. I feel this way because the countries that we had treaties with lost the battle with the Hungarians and our colonies were given to the Hungarian Empire. I think I would have done things a little differently. I would have spent more economic points on the Navy and Army. This way, we would gain more points, since you gained 2 points with the Navy rather than 1 point with the Army, Industry, and Colonies. I would say I have a better understanding of how diplomacy works in the world. With treaties, a country could lose or gain item(s) or element(s) after the outcome. I also understand that a treaty is a result of negotiations between the parties involved.

Child Labor

Hi I am Brandon R. and I am in period 6, 20th Century U.S. History taught by Mr. Salvucci. Child Labor in the 20th Century was very common. Child Labor is children working in the work force, those between the ages of 7 to 15 years old. There were two problems with child labor. The first problem quoted by Florence Kelley is that “children are found in the greatest number where the conditions are most dangerous to life and health.” Children who worked in the tobacco industry suffered from nicotine poisoning. Children who worked in clothing factories suffered from spinal curvature from hunching over sewing machines 48 hours a week. Children who worked in paint factories suffered from breathing arsenic toxic fumes. The second problem quoted by Florence Kelley is that “children, even young girls were employed 13 hours a day and 15 hours on Saturday.” Children who work these hours do not spend much time with their family and are missing out on everyday life.
Women viewed the ways of child labor and tried to make a difference. One woman, Florence Kelley, who was secretary of the National Consumers League, pressed the federal government to outlaw the use of child labor due to the working conditions that children were exposed to. Kelley helped organize consumer boycotts of goods produced by children or by workers in unsanitary or dangerous conditions. This initiative worked because child labor was prohibited in Illinois in 1893. This initiative also worked due to the National Consumers League investigating working conditions in 1899, which then changed working conditions so working can be safe and danger free.

Class expectations

Hi! I’m Brandon R. and I am a student of 20th Century U.S. History period 6 taught my Mr. Salvucci. I am most interested in learning about the wars the United States has been engaged or invovled in, particularly the Vietnam War and the Korean war. I want to gain a better understanding of how and why we became involved in these wars and what we were trying to achieve. I am also really interested in automobiles and would like to learn about the changing technologies and how automakers have improved design, performance, and safety.
I expect to learn how to use the Ipod touch more efficiently, so that I can take better notes. I also expect to learn how to use the Internet to research subject matters. Through Edmodo, I will be able to keep up to date in class.
