Muckrakers

Hello, I’m Kelly E from Mr. Sal’s period six twentieth century class. Muckrakers wrote informational pieces that opened the eyes of the public to factory problems. The muckrakers went and, checked out factory conditions and then proceeded to write about them. They put their own option into these writings they did and, sold it to the public. They did that to try and advance the changes that needed to be done to the factories at that time period.

One of the most famous muckrakers was Upton Sinclair. He wrote about the horrible conditions of the Meat preparation factory. He explained in detail how dirty and, unsafe the factory was. He stated that rat feces covered and, went into the food. This outraged and, scared people. He continued to inform the people about these things till they got fixed or, they changed. Another muckraker was a man by the name of Mr. Tarbell. He targeted the Standard oil company’s harsh ways of dealing with people and their poor safety conditions. When these issues were brought to the public they demanded they be fixed. The government stepped up and, took care of some of the issues. Somethings though failed to be fixed so, people had to take matters into their own hands. They would protest for these things to be fix or, banned. Take for insistence child labor, or the time when all those women died in the sewing factory. The muckrakers helped bring changed through their writings and, bettered the Cities.

Child Labor

Hi my name is Chad R. And I am from Mr. Sal’s period 9 20th century class. The topic that I chose to talk about is “child labor” child labor was looked at as a bad thing. Child labor can be good because you can have things made faster and cheaper, larger quanty, and pay them less. The negatives of child labor are that you have unsanantary conditions, unsafe conditions, and untrained personal.

Child labor was used in the early 1900’s because there were no regulations restricting companies, business from working young children on long hours at a time. In all 50 states it is now illegal to work children under the age of 15 due to fedral laws. These laws went into effect in the min 1900’s due to congress passing many various forms of anti child labor laws. Even today you still see child labor laws in effect. For example in my personal life,I work at a local grocery store and every month my time card is checked to make sure I don’t have more then 35 hours a week.

So in conclusion child labor has its pros and cons. It just so happens the the cons out weigh the pros. For this reason the United States can’t use child labor. Other countries in the world still use child labor. Due to Federal Laws the states are not allowed to participate in the use of child labor.

Womens suffrage

My name is DaiQuana and I am a student in Mr. Sal’s 9th period class. The issue I wil be discussing is women suffrage. Women suffrage is the right of women to vote and run for office. During the 1900s, women struggled to gain the right to vote and run for office. This caused problems such as chaos in the states due to the fact that women were treated differently than men and women wanted to be able to do certain things they weren’t able to do. The issue was eventually solved by the 19th amendment on August 18, 1920.

During this time, voting was obviously an important issue to women. To try to solve the issue, alot of petitions were held. There was also a point where the women created organizations such as the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) and the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA). These organizations condemned the 14th and 15th amendments as blatant injustices to women. These groups worked with journals and raised campaigns. They tried their best to get state legislatures to be in agreement with them. However, only a select few states agreed. With this said, the organizations tried a lot more to allow women to receive the right to vote and run for office. Eventually, this goal was acheived on August 18, 1920 when the 19th amendment was ratified.

Progressive era blog

Hi my name is Stacie M. I am in Mr.Sal’s period six 2Oth century history class. My blog is about expanding voting rights. By 1890 women had won atleast partial suffrage in 19 states. In some of the 19 states women could vote in local or state elections. Only Utah and Wyoming gave women full voting rights. The suffrage movement gathered momentum in the 1890’s. The assosiation grew from 13,000 in 1893 to 75,000 in 1910. By 1912 only nine states gave women the full voting right. All the states were west of the Mississippi River. They could not achieve their goal until the passage of the nineteenth amendment in 1920. While women fought to win the vote, African Americans struggled to regain it. Once the political system was rescued from controlling private interest, citizens could use government to protect the public interest. After the 1920’s everyone was allowed to vote.

my class expectations

Hi, my name is Stacie M. I am in Mr.Salvucci’s period six, 20th century history class. During this school year in Mr.Salvucci’s class I would like to learn a numerous amount of things. The two things I would most like to learn about is, to learn about the difference in economy from back then to present time. I would also like to learn about the journeys that our American soldiers took in the 1900’s. I enjoy learning new things everyday, but learning something I want to learn about makes it easier for me to concentrate.  I expect to learn many things this year. One thing I expect to learn is things about media and using technology. Another thing I expect to learn is how people lived in the 1900’s. I expect to learn these things only because it is my junior year and things will be a little bit difficult.  Using technology will make it easier to find things out you don’t know. Technology’s a great advantage to my class and I.

Crime

It’s Jordin H from period one. The issue I will be defining is crime. I think there is way to much crime going on throughout the world. Like all you hear about is somebody getting shot, stabbed, etc. It’s ridiculous because someone is killed atleast everyday around the world.

Chelsey

Hello my name is Chelsey and I’m in Mr.Salvucci’s 20th Century period 6. In a competitive business climate no company could afford the expenses for injured workers unless it’s competitors could. So for awhile owners and workers fought over how companies should treat and care for their injured workers repeatedly. It has been said that factories, coal mines, and railroads were the three main dangerous places to work. On March 25th, 1911 there was a fire at the triangle shirtwaist factory which had killed 146 female workers who all had no chance to escape; for their company locked doors from the outside, to prevent workers from taking breaks. By 1914 35,000 people died on the job and 700,000 were injured while working for companies. Because of the many companies that treated their workers cruel, it slowly raised public anger at the irresponsibility of big businesses. In 1902 Maryland passed a law where employers had to buy insurance that would compensate workers injured on the job. Finally by 1916, the Congress passed the Workmen’s Compensation Law. About two-thirds of the states companies were required to have some type of workers’ compensation program.

Urban Growth

Hi, My name is Drew D. from Mr. Sal’s period 9 20th Century History class. Urban growth is a bad thing because it lowered the citizens living standards by limiting their resources. Also, not enough jobs were available for all of the people who moved to the cities in hopes of getting a job. Urbanization is the growth of cities. One example of a problem of urban growth was that the resources were limited for the people. There were so many people that there wasn’t enough food to provide for everyone. Another example of an urban growth problem is that there was not enough jobs for everyone. Because there were so many people there wasnt enough jobs for everyone. Urbanization was a bad thing because the growth happend all at once.

The government tried fixing this problem by doing many things. One thing they tried doing was that they had changes in transportation. They also advanced the technology by making steam power instead of water power. This made it so that the factories didnt have to be near the rivers. These things helped Urban Growth by spreading the people out, but it did not completely fix the problem. There was still a lot of people in the cities even the goverment did things so that it would not be as bad. People still lived in poor conditions and didn’t have enough food to eat. They were crowded and the places they lived were unsanitary.

Living Conditions

Hi, my name is Marissa G. from 20th Century period 6. In the 1900’s, the living conditions of the urban areas were very unhealthy and not particularly safe. Because of the growing population of the cities, the amount of space for living was very limited. The space was so limited that the houses and buildings were built right next to each other. The ventilation system caused people to become ill and diseased because of how close they were and the lack of care given to it.

Jane Addams helped by making a community center and nursery. She would watch people’s children so they could go to work without leaving their young home alone like many would have had to before. Although this didn’t help with the increasing about of people living in the city, it helped by giving people a place to go besides their own homes. Eventually they had to make more city space, places to live, and take care of living conditions more carefully.

Educating Children

Hello my name is Marissa M. and im in Mr. Salvucci’s 20th Century period 6. My project was on educating children and people don’t agree with the way schools are, how far they have to drive to a school, and what the teachers are teaching the students. During the 1800s the laws had started making young people go to school until they had finished 12th grade. In 1870 approximately 20 percent of the people in the United States were illiterate. Because of this the expansion of public education it led to a sharp decline in illiteracy. So people had decided to make schools in the areas they live in which made the public literacy increase. By the 1900s there were 6,000 high schools and by 1920 there were 14,000. In the addition of growing the public education was changing. Philosopher John Dewey had criticized schools for emphasizing memorization of knowledge. He had argued that schools should relate learning to the concerns of the students. But it did not work because people are still learning about history and science. It somewhat worked because we are learning english, other languages, and about our body. There are over a 14,000 schools all over the United States.
